The '''Shape Functions''' or '''basis fuctions'''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finite_element_analysis#Choosing_a_basis] are used to obtain an approach solution (<math>\hat\varphi (x) </math>) to the exact solution (<math>\varphi (x)</math>) in the Finite Element Method as a lineal combination of some kind of well known functions <math>N_i(x) \frac{}{}</math>.

These functions can be defined:

Some important aspects to consider in the shape functions are:
* if they present continuity over the domain (or subdomain);
